SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Eugene-Springfield Youth Orchestra performed for over a thousand Springfield students Tuesday.

Among other things, they played the “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme song.

The youth orchestra is in its 85th year, and members told KEZI 9 News they love sharing their passion for music with younger elementary school students.

“I think it gets them excited to play music and lets them know that this is available,” said sophomore Derrick Hazelton, a tuba player.

The concert is a long-standing tradition in Springfield and Eugene with the goal of inspiring elementary school children to get involved with music.

Christopher Noel, the current conductor, said it’s working.

“When they get to see not only a great orchestra but one so close to them in age, they feel inspired to join the tradition,” Noel said.

The concert was free, and the orchestra even paid for bussing.
