LANE COUNTY, Ore. – A World War II artifact is back with its rightful owners after a months-long investigation.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said they learned of the stolen US Navy ship bell in fall 2020.

Despite the Holiday Farm Fire destroying the property where the artifact was kept, the bell survived the flames, only to be stolen.

Deputies said the owners obtained the artifact from a serviceman upon the decommissioning of the USS Kermit Roosevelt.

Working off an anonymous tip, the “very heavy and valuable piece of US history” was recovered. The Springfield Police Department and Springfield Public Works staff played a vital role, deputies said.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 541-682-4150.
