EUGENE, Ore.-- The woman who shot a viral video of an employee at La Mota dispensary in Eugene being assaulted by a man for his refusal to wear a mask believes it was not a random incident.
Stephanie Babb was shopping for CBD at La Mota Sunday night when 32-year-old Marshall Blansett reportedly entered the store. She said Blansett came in at a strategic time when there would be no manager on duty. To her, it didn't seem like he was there to shop. Babb said the employees asked him to put on a mask but he refused.
"They weren’t just victimized by a random drunk guy or a guy looking to fight, they were literally targeted for a political statement," Babb said. "He practiced this, this had been used, he knew exactly the timing to go in and exactly what to say.”
Babb said she started recording the altercation just in case things escalated. She never expected punches to be thrown. Eugene Police said the employees tried to push Blansett into the main lobby so they could close a secure door. However, this agitated Blansett and that's when the situation started to become physical.
"We’re all caught up in this huge scenario that none of us wanted to be in," Babb said. "We just wanted it to go away so we could go home. That’s what I don’t think people who are commenting understand, we were just hoping this guy was being a jerk and he would get over it and move on, he didn’t."
Babb said she called the police after Blansett was caught on her video taking her phone and throwing it into a nearby business.
Blansett was cited for second-degree trespassing, assault, and criminal mischief.
