SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- One of the suspects in Friday afternoon's carjacking in Springfield has been charged.
Shelbee Casey, 39, of Springfield faces charges of first-degree and second-degree robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Police said Casey and Ronald Green, 56, of Springfield stole a woman's car at the Shoppes at Gateway.
Following the carjacking, the stolen vehicle crashed, sending the two suspects to the hospital, police said. They said Green remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Police received the call reporting the carjacking at about 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 6.
Dyan McKelvy, the victim, was sitting in her car, waiting for her daughter to finish shopping, when Casey allegedly got into her vehicle. Police said when she turned to her left, Green threatened her with a knife.
McKelvy's daughter, Mckenna Hepperle, came out as the incident was ending.
"Some guy came to the window that she had just rolled down with a knife to her face and said, 'Scoot over, we're taking your car,'" said Hepperle.
Police said McKelvy managed to escape and take a photo of the car as the culprits drove away.
"So she's begging and pleading, and the woman says fine let her out, so they let her out and she's snapping pictures as they zoom away," said Hepperle.
By the time police got to the scene, the suspects were gone.
"You'd think somebody would've thought, oh that car, there's screaming, there's honking maybe, but no, people were walking by and nobody even stopped to help until after the fact," said Hepperle.
Springfield police took a report of the incident and sent out information to multiple agencies to be on the lookout for the stolen car.
Within two hours of Springfield Police sending out the information, Oregon State Police said they got a report of a reckless driver in a car matching the stolen one.
Police said the car was driving southbound on Interstate 5. They found the car crashed in a ditch by milepost 156 and the two suspects were ejected from it.
