EUGENE, Ore. -- Neighbors are speaking out after a car with a baby inside it was stolen from a driveway in Eugene on Wednesday.

The car was stolen at about 4:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Langers Lane. Police said a 1-year-old child was in a car seat in the back.

One witness said she saw someone pull into the driveway and go inside the home. Not long after, she heard the screams of the family as they realized the car and baby were gone.

About 20 minutes later, that car crashed into a fence near Spencer Creek Road and Fawn Hills Drive, not far from Twin Oaks Elementary School. The woman who is suspected of stealing the car allegedly fled the scene, leaving the baby behind. Police said the baby wasn't injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Bethany Maizel lives near Langers Lane. She didn't see the car get stolen but witnessed the aftermath.

"The police were cruising in our cul-de-sac. They came in really aggressively, and they were rolling around, and I knew something was amiss. But we do occasionally have a police presence," she said.

Maizel said that she's been aware of smaller crimes in the neighborhood, but something like this is unheard of.

"People can't think this is OK. You can't go around snatching up people's babies, whether you meant it or not," she said. "That's not the kind of community we are."

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, no arrests have been made.
