Winter storm building on Oregon Coast, moving inland

5:30 P.M. UPDATE: The winter storm is building, but the strongest winds are still a few hours away and so is the heaviest rain, Chief Meteorologist Marisa Woloszyn said.

4 P.M. UPDATE: The storm has yet to reach full force on the Oregon Coast, but the Emerald People's Utility District is warning customers about the potential for downed power lines and outages as the wind picks up. 

"If you haven't already done so, figure out what you'll do if you lose power," public relations coordinator Patty Jo Angelini said.


2 P.M. UPDATE: Rain from today's winter storm has arrived at the Oregon Coast, but the wind has yet to pick up.

The storm will move inland throughout the afternoon and into the evening.


EUGENE, Ore. -- A winter storm is headed our way this afternoon, and residents should expect strong winds and heavy rain.

The storm will hit the Oregon Coast at about 2 p.m. and will reach the valleys at about 4 or 5 p.m. In the Cascades/Foothills, the storm is expected at around 6 or 7 p.m.

KEZI 9 News Meteorologist Andrew Shipotofsky said the storm will end after noon on Tuesday from the northwest to the southeast.

The Coast and Cascades can expect three to six inches of rain, and the valleys can expect about one to three inches.

Wind will reach gusts of 60 to 70 mph on the beaches and above 1,000 feet in the Coast Range. Below that height, gusts closer to 50 to 60 mph can be expected. The valleys will see wind as well with gusts of 35 to 45 mph.

The following advisories are in place:

  • HIGH SURF WARNING: Oregon Coast until 4 p.m. Tuesday; waves up to 35 feet
  • HIGH WIND WARNING: Oregon Coast until 4 p.m. Tuesday; gusts up to 70 mph
  • WIND ADVISORY: Willamette Valley and Umpqua Basin until noon Tuesday; gusts up to 45 mph
  • FLOOD WATCH: North Willamette Valley, Coast, and Foothills until noon Wednesday -- Coast and Cascades, 3-6 inches; Valley, 1-3 inches
