ROSEBURG, Ore. – A Winston man drowned in the North Umpqua River Monday night, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived after 8 p.m. to the 900 block of Echo Drive off North Bank Road. They learned a man who had been in the river was not breathing.

They found David Ham, 36, on an island, and bystanders were performing CPR. The deputies got to the man by boat and brought him to shore to an ambulance. Ham was taken to Mercy Medical Center where he later died.

Ham had been swimming when he started to yell for help and went under water, deputies said.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating.

Douglas County Fire District #2, Bay Cities Ambulance and Glide Fire Department assisted.
