EUGENE, Ore. -- WinCo Foods confirmed Wednesday it will open a third store in Eugene at the former Shopko location off of Coburg Road.

The company said that planned remodeling work will begin "soon."

According to WinCo, the city of Eugene recently approved permits for renovations at the building on 2815 Chad Drive, including new landscaping, an updated front facade and a bicycle parking shelter. The city said it is still waiting for WinCo to pay the fees for those permits.

The city said permits for a reconstructed rear loading dock and a bottle drop are still on hold as the company adjusts its proposal.

The store will employ around 150 to 180 people, the company said.

Some residents in northeast Eugene believe that the area is growing rapidly, and a new grocery store will contribute to the health of the community.

"To me, it's just one more support for the community. People live here. They need access for their groceries. It's close, it's convenient without drawing us downtown or into high-traffic areas," said neighbor Marsha Karp.

Others remain concerned that WinCo will draw increased traffic to the area, impacting safety on the streets.

"Without traffic in the streets and opportunities for people to get in and out, that's going to cause more accidents, more people getting hurt and more pedestrians getting hit," said resident Jaysun Frost.

Developers commissioned a traffic study to measure the impact of a grocery store at Coburg Road and Chad Drive. The study reported that traffic impacts would be minimal in the short-term, and proposed changes to control traffic in and out of the parking lot.

The 99,509-square-foot building has been empty since Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2019 and announced it would close 200 stores.
