WINSTON, Ore. -- The Wildlife Safari in Winston held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday evening for their new elephant expansion.

With the help of donors and Timberline Fence Company, the Wildlife Safari has constructed a three-acre area for their elephants to roam around in.

The addition brings their elephant habitat to a total of seven acres.

Elephant Department Supervisor Katie Alayon said they wanted to get the visitors closer while doing what’s best for the elephants.

“One of the things we were really looking for is a way for our guests to see them better,” Alayon said. “So, everything in this expansion, other than focusing on what’s best for the elephants, was about guests. We were looking for guest visibility; we were looking for guest interaction.”

Visitors will be able to see the elephants in their new area sometime next month.

Alayon said they may even have a special event for George’s birthday on July 7 near the new enclosure.
