EUGENE, Ore. -- The weather was a factor in three crashes in the Eugene-Springfield area Wednesday morning.

Firefighters said a pickup truck caught fire Wednesday morning after hitting a tree on Marcola Road. They said the driver hit a patch of ice around midnight.

Fire crews found the pickup engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Officials used thermal imaging cameras but they didn't find anyone in vehicle or nearby.

The case was turned over to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

Another crash happened around 7 a.m. at the roundabout near 17th and Mill Street.

The driver was headed northbound on Mill Street, police said.

They said she had not fully defrosted her window, making it difficult to see through. The pedestrian was crossing Mill Street when she was struck, according to police.

The driver told police she had rolled down her windows to check both ways but still didn't see the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing.

"I told the driver 'Hey you do need to make sure your windows are defrosted. It's scary, we're getting into that part of the year where it's always dark and our windows are frozen over when we get into the cars', " said Jannalyn Farley, EPD. "I told the pedestrian, 'Hey maybe get a reflector."

Police advice drivers to wipe any ice off your windshield before hitting the road. They also said pedestrians should wear bright colors or reflectors.

Police said the driver and the pedestrian were both college students.

The third crash also happened around 7 a.m.

Police said the driver hit a patch of black ice while crossing the bridge over Northwest Expressway and lost control of his vehicle. He hit a concrete barrier and bounced off, police said.

Traffic was tied up for about an hour. No injuries were reported.
