MAPLETON, Ore. -- Several Mapleton residents are speaking out, saying they've continued to receive water bills upwards of ten times the normal amount.
"When I got my first bill, it was insane to me," resident Mariah Johnston said. According to her, her water bill for the month of May was over $800 when it is normally around $40.
She mentioned having difficulty getting in contact with the members of the Mapleton Water District board.
"I need somebody to come up with a solution and for people to respond," Johnston said. "I guess that's the frustrating thing."
Officials said some bills were inaccurate because the water meters were read wrong for months. For others, it was discovered that there was a leak within their system. But for everyone else, there simply isn't an answer.
Dustin Basurto, the newly-added board director, said the many of the issues happened during the previous administration.
"It's not easy, and I think the previous employees were set up to fail," he said.
And he plans to move forward with a new water infrastructure in the coming months.
"We can't make promises on figuring out what happened with the previous administration, but we're going to try our best moving forward," Basurto said.
