Watching the clock: 4J continues work on schedule changes

Tonight was the latest community forum in an ongoing effort.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Parents, teachers, and students had another chance to weigh in on 4J's continuing effort to synchronize its school calendar and start times.

The district's first proposal was widely criticized, and some at tonight's community forum disagreed with the current draft as well.

Some suggested lengthening the school year instead of having longer days.

"If they're having such a hard time in the last hour of the day and we're making them go two more hours I really worry that that final hour or two is a 'feel-good' thing without the real 'learn-good' part," Sjana Barcroft-Hundt, a teacher at Monroe Middle School, said. "Their brains aren't going to hold more just because they're sitting in the seat longer."

Today is also the close of an online survey about schedules. Officials say around 2,400 people have completed the survey and voiced their opinions.
