Washington County crash results in at least 13 dead elk

13 known elk were hit by at least one, possible more vehicles on Thursday morning in Washington County.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore. – Oregon State Police said a vehicle accident resulted in the death of at least 13 elk.

On Thursday around 4:30 a.m., State Police said officers along with deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash on Highway 26 near milepost 51 in Washington County.

Once on scene, officers said 13 known elk were hit by at least one, possibly more vehicles. They said half of the elk were killed on scene and the others were euthanized.

State police said troopers are working to salvage the meat and distribute it to food banks and senior centers.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is handling the crash and Oregon State Police is working with the Oregon Department of Transportation in removing the elk.

State Police said the driver of the vehicle was not injured.
