EUGENE, Ore. -- Volunteers came together Monday to spend the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday planting trees in Bethel Community Park.

Two groups, Eugene Outdoors and Friends of Trees, worked together to make the event happen. It began at 9 a.m. and over 100 volunteers showed up prepared to work.

“It's really great to see people from all walks of life coming out here in the community," volunteer Sydney Katz said. "We've had U of O students and families come. Everybody is just out here planting trees, and it's really great to see everyone come out for a collective goal, make the environment just a little bit better."

Now, thanks to their efforts, there are 51 new trees growing in the Bethel community. A grant from the Eugene Water & Electric Board helped pay for the new trees.

Volunteers planted Sequoias for shade. They also planted fruit trees, including pear and apple trees.
