Victims identified in deadly New Year's Day crash

Police officials said Geoffrey Gibson has not been charged at this time as the driver.

EUGENE, Ore.-- The Eugene Police Department released the names of the two people involved in a deadly crash on New Year's Day.

Geoffrey Gibson, 41, and Mikel Johnston, 41, were found in a mangled car that crashed into a traffic light pole early that morning.

According to Eugene Police, Johnston was the passenger in the car and was the one pronounced dead at the scene. Gibson is still at RiverBend Hospital being treated for his injuries.

Police officials said Gibson has not been charged at this time as the driver. 

They said this is still an active investigation and investigators are looking into every detail from that morning. Anyone with any information is asked to call the police department.
