EUGENE, Ore. – Only two days before Memorial Day, American Legion Post #83 was vandalized.

James Marlett, finance officer for the post, says he felt violated when he saw the damage.

"A lot of outrage has been expressed on the internet about why somebody would, because it's senseless, it just doesn't make any sense for what they did or why they did it," said Marlett.

Police said the handrails and bricks near the building's entrance were torn down. They also said there was a chip in the flagpole. Police think the building, which is on the national registry of Historic Places, was hit sometime between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on May 25.

Marlett says the building is a historic site because it's been around for over 100 years. The American Legion has been using it since 1975.

Police said the vandalism happened right before the organization's Memorial Day fundraiser to benefit veterans. John Hampton, the commander of the post, says the timing of this vandalism makes it even harder to process.

"To do this on a weekend where we are honoring veterans who were unable to come home from war is unfathomable," said Hampton.

He says they will most likely begin clean up Tuesday and are waiting an appraisal to see how much monetary damage was caused. He says the boy scouts have already offered to help clean up and they have also received a few donations from the community. They are now looking for a mason who has experience with this type of damage and can help them rebuild.

If you have any information on the vandalism you are asked to call police at 541-682-5111.
