SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Springfield school board unanimously approved an emergency declaration to repair more than $100,000 in damage after vandalism to the HVAC system at Riverbend Elementary.

On Wednesday the Springfield Public Schools Board of Education held a special meeting to discuss repairs and vote.

District officials said the vandalism happened on July 2 and caused extensive damage to multiple parts of the HVAC system. At this time, the full damages are not known, but the initial estimate of the damage is likely to go beyond $100,000.

An insurance adjuster is being assigned, and the district said a mechanical contractor will be needed.

State law defines an emergency as unforeseen circumstances that create a substantial risk to services or threat to property and must be resolved quickly. An emergency declaration allows the school to forego the typical competitive bid process.
