EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon Provost Jayanth Banavar held a town hall meeting Monday afternoon to discuss budget cuts the university may have to make.
Provost Jayanth Banavar said because of a projected $8 million deficit from this current fiscal year and a possible cost increase of $23.5 million next fiscal year, the university is looking at ways to balance their budget and cover roughly $34 million.
Vice President for Finance and Administration Jamie Moffitt said those increases come from things like faculty and staff pay raises and increased costs to pay into the Public Employee Retirement System, or PERS.
To cover those costs, Moffitt said the university is looking at making cuts to the general fund.
Moffitt said with a budget cut of around $11.5 million over two years, non-resident undergraduate tuition and state funds recently announced by the ways and means co-chair, they can make up about $22 million.
Banavar said departments have been asked to submit plans for cuts to University President Michael Schill early next month. He will then discuss those plans with each department and make adjustments as possible.
Banavar said their most important objective is to protect student success and productivity.
"Our students come first, and we have to do everything we can to ensure our students are successful and they have a really productive time here at the university," Banavar said.
The University of Oregon may also get an additional nearly $8 million from the state, but could still have to raise in-state tuition. That decision won't be made until May.
In addition, Banavar has announced that effective July 1 he will be stepping down from his role as provost. He did not provide a reason for his decision.
