EUGENE, Ore.-- The University of Oregon announced Tuesday, a new diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative to create a more community-oriented police department.
The first step is to create a committee, made up of students, staff, and faculty from the university. They will oversee implementations on ways to create more diversity, equity, and inclusion in UOPD. An outside auditor recommended the department work on hiring and retention, employee training, and bolstering engagement with outside community groups.
On top of that, UOPD is in the process of hiring 12 new unarmed community service officers, which will replace seven current police officer positions. Back in November of 2020, President Michael Schill announced UOPD would transition some positions to community service officers. These officers will not wear traditional police-style uniforms and mainly patrol campus buildings. They will also respond to non-emergency calls that do not require an armed officer.
The university plans on having these positions filled and community service officers on the force by the start of next school year.
