EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a resolution to rename Deady Hall, the campus's first building.
Temporarily, the building will be renamed to University Hall. The process for selecting a permanent name will be decided upon at a later point.
During the meeting, several members of the board thanked fellow member Andrew Colas, who recently renewed calls to change the name.
In a letter to the campus, Schill said Matthew Deady -- who the hall was named after -- held racist views and was pro-slavery. Students first raised concerns about the name back in 2016 but Schill ultimately recommended against changing it.
The school must also establish an installation to educate people about who Matthew Deady was and his complicated legacy.
