EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon unveiled big plans to renovate Hayward Field.

The work on the project will start in June 2018. It’s funded thanks to Phil and Penny Knight and more than 50 other donors. The project is expected to be finished by 2020.

The UO says the renovated field will set a new standard for sports venues.

The new Hayward Field will hold 12,900 people and be able to expand to hold nearly 30,000. Hayward currently holds 10,500.

UO officials say they want to create a “theater” for track and field. There will be unobstructed sight lines, great acoustics and generous and comfortable 44-inch tread depth for seating throughout the stadium with 24-inch seats.

A 165-foot, nine story tower will be built by the Northeast corner of the stadium. The Bowerman Tower will feature a lobby filled with interpretive exhibits, an observation deck, viewing areas and more.
