ROSEBURG, Ore. – Umpqua Community College is receiving a large grant to fund new career technical education opportunities for students in the area.

The $200,000 Workforce Readiness Grant is coming from the Oregon Department of Education’s Youth Development Division.

Officials said the money will support the efforts of Bright Futures Umpqua, which provides career-connected learning for youth in Douglas County.

The college plans to hire a career-connected learning facilitator to support a new UCC pre-apprenticeship option for high school students and young adults. They added that the money will also help cover the costs for supplies and fees to support these students.

Officials said they will expand the Horizons Career Exploration Camps, and a talent advisor will be provided to local schools to help high school students job shadow and get connected to internship opportunities.
