EUGENE, Ore. -- Volunteers from Wilamette Riverkeeper and AmeriCorps teamed up to clean the Willamette River between the Valley River Center and the Beltline overpass Tuesday as a part of Trashy Tuesday.
Organizers said Trashy Tuesday occurs the second Tuesday of every month.
Michelle Emmons, the South Valley advocate for Willamette Riverkeeper, said they pulled plastic water bottles, clothes and mattresses out of the water.
Emmons said along the river they saw numerous abandoned and occupied camps. She said they make an effort to talk to people in those camps and hand out trash bags while cleaning up around the river.
"We've seen everything from broken gnomes' faces today to broken down mattresses, dentures, we found a whole pile of condoms with Fourth of July ties on them and a nice star-spangled tie," Emmons said.
Organizers said they welcome new volunteers for Trashy Tuesday and other year-long events.
