Transients caused barn fire in Springfield, officials say

Firefighters had to back up down a narrow road to get to the nearest water source a quarter mile away.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A barn caught on fire in Springfield on Wednesday, and firefighters say transients are to blame, and it’s not the first time it’s happened.

The fire broke out at Mount Vernon and Jasper roads just after 11 a.m.

Captain Paul Highfill with Eugene-Springfield Fire said it was tricky to fight the fire because there’s no water source on the property.

The nearest access to water is a quarter mile away down a narrow road. They could get in easily but couldn’t turn around.

Highfill said they know the property well.

“This is the third fire on this property,” Highfill said. “All fires have been started by transients. This is a horse barn, lantern-style construction, probably 40 by 60 in diameter, and it was fully involved when we got here … the roof was down.”

No one was hurt.

Firefighters said they were called to the property in November 2017 after a home caught on fire. They said transients also started that fire. And they said transients started another fire about six months ago.
