Train hits dog in Springfield

Police responded to a railroad crossing in Springfield on Thursday night after a train struck a dog.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Police responded to a railroad crossing in Springfield on Thursday night after a train hit a dog.

Springfield police reported receiving several calls about the incident, with reports of people yelling and concerns that a person may have been struck by the train.

When police officers arrived at the South 42nd Street railroad crossing, they found that a golden retriever had been hit by a train and critically injured. The dog’s owner was nearby and asked that the dog be euthanized.

Police said the dog’s owner was heavily intoxicated and made suicidal statements. Cahoots was called and the dog’s owner was taken to University District Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m.
