SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A Thurston High School student is getting a big honor with a Nike shoe that he designed.

Andrew Merydith’s design is one of six styles from Nike’s 2017 Doernbecher collection.

Merydith, who battles cystic fibrosis, used his initials to make a logo on the shoe, and put “#ilovethefam” on the outsole. He said that’s because his family is his hero and has supported him through his journey.

“Under my [baseball cap’s] bill, it says ‘if someone is strong enough to knock you down, show them you are strong enough to get back up,’” Merydith said. “And I have that because you don’t give up. Just don’t give up. You can't, you just have to keep going. And that's kind of how I live by."

He said he wants to become a scientist to help treat and cure cystic fibrosis. But after designing these shoes, he is now also interested in a career in that.

The shoes will be on sale online and in select Nike stores on November 18 for $190.
