EUGENE, Ore. -- Thieves got away with thousands of dollars in merchandise after an early-morning burglary at a gas station off Goodpasture Loop.

The theft happened just before 3 a.m. Wednesday at the Chevron gas station. Surveillance video shows at least five people using a rock to smash a side door to get inside, who then grabbed alcohol and tobacco products.

Employee Marcus Moland said he noticed the break-in when he showed up to work this morning just after 5 a.m.

"They seem like a younger group of people," Moland said. "Some of them were pretty little, but just by what was taken it seems like they stole stuff they weren't old enough to buy."

The owner told KEZI 9 News the thieves the value of the stolen goods combined with the damage to the budiling is more than $7,000 and this is the first break-in at the store since he bought it five years ago.

Moland said they called police as soon he came to work but police didn't arrive till around 12:30 p.m.

A spokeswoman with the Eugene Police Department said that the officer-involved shooting early Wednesday is taking up extra resources. Since the theft is not an active crime, other calls for service have priority.

Employee Chris Hunt said he understands why police couldn't get here sooner.

"It would be nice to have an extra guy volunteer or something to do that kind job," Hunt said ."But they have some serious stuff to work and this was a definitely low priority."
