SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Three teenage boys have been arrested on felony charges in connection with the vandalism of an HVAC system at a Springfield school last week.

District officials said vandals likely caused upwards of $100,000 in damage at Riverbend Elementary on July 2.

Police told KEZI 9 News two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old used ladders to climb up to the roof of the school and started stomping on the HVAC equipment.

Melissa Smith, whose son just finished fifth grade at Riverbend, said the teens need to take responsibility for their actions.

"Their parents need to have a serious talk with them, whoever it was," said Smith. "It costs a lot of money to repair, so it's very unfortunate."

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education is meeting Wednesday night to discuss repairs. They hope to get air conditioning back on line before September when students return.
