SWEET HOME, Ore. – A fire that burned through a church in Sweet Home is believed to be suspicious, fire officials say.

Firefighters responded to the fellowship hall of Elm Street Baptist at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

When firefighters arrived, they found the building on fire. The fire was contained to one building because the 911 call came through early enough, Sweet Home Fire District Chief Dave Barringer said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and Oregon State Police Arson Investigation unit responded. The fire is believed to be criminal in nature, and the investigation is ongoing.
