SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Major improvements are coming to Ford's Pond community park in Sutherlin.
The City of Sutherlin is partnering with the Friends of Ford's Pond to make the upgrades possible. The Friends of Ford's Pond is a nonprofit group that is focused on maintaining the area.
“They’re doing a lot next year that will be interesting to watch," said Kenneth Earl, a park regular. "It’s just a nice place. It’s wonderful out here.”
Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be going toward the improvements.
The City of Sutherlin received two grants from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which add up to more than $600,000.
On top of the grant money, the Friends of Ford's Pond said they will be contributing $16,000 to the project. And the Sutherlin Area Chamber of Commerce will be contributing another $50,000 from their tourism lodging tax.
Officials want to focus on creating Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) parking for visitors and improving the walking paths throughout the 202-acre park.
Construction will start in summer 2020.
