SUTHERLIN, Ore. - The City of Sutherlin has formed a working group to discuss whether or not the fire department is serving the city's needs, and discuss changes if it is not.

The group consists of city counselors, fire officials, and community members to ensure all points of views were covered.

They had their first meeting on Wednesday, January 24.

Both city officials and the community agree that they don't see any current problem with the Sutherlin Fire Department. They also established trust.

”It’s never been a concern to me. I’ve always had good faith in the fire service here," said Luke Herscher, one of the community members in the group.

City officials said this is more of a preemptive measure before they start taking more steps to expand economically. The city has expressed that their current goal of bringing more businesses to town. More businesses would mean more people, and they need to make sure their safety services would continue to operate properly with more people.

”So we’re trying to make sure that we have everything in line, so that new people want to come here, and they want to stay here, and they want to know that this is a good, safe community and that we have their best interests in mind," said Travis Tomlinson, a city councilor in the group.

Nothing was decided on or put on the table to consider in Wednesday's meeting. Group members said they're not sure yet if anything at all will end up changing.

”If the present model is what’s determined to be what’s best for the community, it may stay the same. However, there could be a different model that comes out of this process," said Doug Dawson, interim Sutherlin fire chief.
