EUGENE, Ore. – Students in Eugene School District 4J are required to continue wearing face masks at schools – indoors and outdoors – despite updated mask wearing guidance from the state.

Officials with the district said masks are required for students and staff throughout the school day from arrival to dismissal and during outdoor activities. The reason? The district said it’s intended to maintain consistency and safety for students.

Starting June 1, however, masks will be optional for staff members who are outside when no students are present. Physical distancing must be maintained. Fully vaccinated staff whose status has been verified will not be required to wear masks or social distance indoors when no students are present.

Regarding high school sports, officials said face masks are optional for athletes and coaches taking part in indoor sports outside the school day, but only if they are fully vaccinated and have had their status verified.

For outdoor events, face masks are optional for everyone, including spectators, but physical distancing and capacity restrictions still apply.
