SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Students at Springfield High School are learning valuable skills through a series of woodworking classes.

The classes teach high schoolers skills that will benefit them for life, even if they don’t end up working in the carpentry field.

In the class, students choose from a wide variety of projects -- building nightstands, tables, stools, dressers and even guitars. They also make cabinets that are sold to the public.

They use advanced equipment, learning skills that can transition to family-wage jobs after graduation.

Students told KEZI 9 News they relish the opportunity to get out from behind a desk and work with their hands.

“It’s definitely paid off,” junior David Estes said. “It’s definitely a good skill to have. From what I’ve been told, there’s a huge need for careers in the trades, so it could be a good career.”

Springfield High School also offers a machine tech course and a class on welding.
