SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Kids from the Academy of Arts and Academics in Springfield donated an hour of their day to beautifying their community on Friday.
It's a tradition that was started last year as a way to show appreciation for the place they call home and take a sense of responsibility over it.
The city of Springfield donated trash bags, gloves and tools to pick up trash and trucked it all away at the end of the day.
"We're trying to keep the environment clean because as people may know, the planet's getting really polluted and stuff, and so we're trying to counter that, and I'm happy about it," said freshman Destiny Pierce.
The whole school, which includes more than 200 kids, got the opportunity to participate.
Superintendent Todd Hamilton also tagged along and got the opportunity to get to know the students.
