SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A Springfield man was charged with first-degree manslaughter on Friday in the death of an infant boy in Springfield on Feb. 7.
Sergeant David Lewis of the Springfield Police Department said Louis Pocza, 21, was responsible for watching the child at the time. He is not related to the victim, who was less than two years old.
"Anytime someone who is that innocent gets killed it's bad because they have no way of defending themselves or speaking for themselves," Lewis said.
The child was taken to Riverbend Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are not releasing the cause of death at this time but Lewis said an autopsy was conducted.
"When these things happen it's difficult to put together the case sometimes because there are injuries that can happen on an infant that are really hard to detect sometimes," Lewis said.
Detectives interviewed the victim’s mother and Pocza at the scene, and police said detectives received further information that led to Pocza’s arrest.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact detectives at 541-726-3721.
