SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The City of Springfield is hoping to build a new public library. Staff believe the current space located on the second floor of City Hall is too small and outdated for their growing number of visitors.

KEZI spoke with Emily David, the Director of the Springfield Public Library. She said they’ve been at their current location for more than 35 years. David said building a new library has been in the works since 2012.

She said more and more people are using the library than ever before and they are running out of room for materials, research and work spaces as well as programming for children and adults. David said the current space is about 26,000 square feet and is outdated which makes it difficult to bring in new technology. They hope to build a facility that's more than double the size of the current library, and move across the street from their current location to city-owned property at 5th and A Street.

KEZI spoke with a couple of people who go to the library often. They had mixed responses to the potential new library.

"I think it would be utilized,” said Aliya Basom. “I think having more options for the community is always helpful and never a bad thing."

"The library is just fine the way it is,” said Tom O’Neal. “Every time I come in here the staff is great, they bend over backwards for me. I find what I want, if I can't get it here, they get it from another library."

David said they are still early in their plans. She said a new library is projected to cost about $30 million. She said it would mostly be paid for by a bond measure they hope to put on the ballot this November.

David said they plan on hosting meetings throughout February to give people more information on their potential plans and to hear their input.
