SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- An apprenticeship program in Springfield is getting some up-and-comers to join the sheet metal industry.

The Sheet Metal Institute, located off Laura Street, is a five-year program that offers sheet metal apprenticeships through the state of Oregon.

Instructor John Tillotson told KEZI 9 News their program offers levels of training required to allow students to be successful in their careers, and it gives contractors the best-trained workforce in the industry.

“They come in here, they take classes for five years and when they get done they become a journeyman sheet metal worker,” Tillotson said.

Tillotson said it can be a good alternative for people who don’t want to go to college.

“It’s just another career path,” Tillotson said. “It’s a good paying job. They pay family wages and benefits. There’s insurance, and there’s a pension, and all that to look forward to. So, it’s a heck of a good career opportunity for people.”

Tillotson said they take applications every week.
