SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Five people nearly died from heroin overdoses in Springfield on Saturday. Police said a very potent opioid, that's been a growing problem in the area, could be to blame.

Lt. Scott McKee of the Springfield Police Department said five suspected heroin overdoses occurred within one day.

Springfield police used nasal Narcan three times to save three overdose patients. Two other patients received IV Narcan, administered by EMS and medical personnel.

Lt. McKee said this volume is unusual and disturbing. He said their concern is that this dose of heroin contains fentanyl.

"Fentanyl is very potent," McKee said. "If a heroin user is not anticipating it, fentanyl can be lethal because typically the dosage is such a high intensity ... it can cause death immediately."

Police are warning heroin users to beware of the lethal substance being circulated in the area.
