SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Springfield city councilors are one step closer in their campaign to create a new public library.

The city council heard the results of that feasibility study during their work session on Monday evening.

They held that feasibility study to determine if people in Springfield would support a new library and the costs that come along with it.
Sharon Leighty & Company conducted that study.

They interviewed 33 business owners, community leaders and other potential financial backers of the new library.

"They believe there will be challenges to raise $1.6 million in the private -- it's called private philanthropy," Leighty said. "So, it's basically corporate money, individuals and private foundation money."

That $1.6 million would be in addition to the $34 million bond measure that would be put up to a public vote.

Leighty said based on her interviews, people aren't sure the community would support the bond measure, either.

Councilors did offer up other options, like remodeling the existing library and even a smaller building for the new one.

The public will have opportunities to weigh in on the project over the next few months, with community meetings and a survey that will come out in March.

Those community meetings and open houses will be in the Library Meeting Room on the following dates:

  • Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 2 at 3 p.m.
  • Feb. 13 at 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.

The survey will be sent out in March, following the feedback received from these meetings.
