Eugene, Ore. -- Spring break is here! For many, that means it's time to get out of town.

Before leaving on vacation, Eugene police recommend taking steps to make a home look occupied. Police say burglars are usually looking for an easy target. If there are signs that someone is home, the burglar is more likely to move on.

Consider keeping lights on a timer or motion sensor both inside and outside. Police say it's also a good idea to keep a television or radio on so that it sounds like someone is home. If you're going to be away long enough for mail to pile up, stopping your mail during your trip might be a good idea. It's also smart to ask your neighbors to check on your home and maybe even park in your driveway occasionally.

Eugene police also offer a home vacation check program for residents. During your vacation, they'll stop by your home as many times as you like and check for anything out of the ordinary. They'll even move things like newspapers or flyers to give the appearance that you're home.
