EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon Senator Ron Wyden reached a major milestone Monday, hosting his 900th town hall in Oregon since he was elected. The event was part of the First Amendment Tour he’s doing in Oregon this week.

The town hall was held in Roosevelt Middle School's cafeteria, where hundreds of people attended to find out what Wyden’s stance was on certain hot button issues.

Members of the audience asked the senator various questions on topics like immigration and customs enforcement and the separation of families at the border.

Wyden told KEZI things need to change and the policy should be ended immediately.

"I was the one who was taking on the secretary of health the other day, when it was clear that he was disconnected from reality. He kept talking about how the detainees had portals and computers alike, and I kept trying to point out that they're in cells,” Wyden said. “So I’m going to do everything I can to push the health department, which is under our jurisdiction, to end the policy."

Another hot button issue the senator touched on was the Supreme Court vacancy. He told me he believes the opening is a referendum on health care.

"What I focused on today when folks asked about the Supreme Court is yes there are issues about process,” Wyden said. “But ultimately it is the question what our values are. In particular on health care. Does the country want to turn back the clock and allow the insurance companies to again discriminate against somebody with a preexisting condition?"

Wyden said he appreciates everyone who attended Monday's town hall. He will continue his tour until July 5. Wednesday he plans on walking in Ashland’s Fourth of July Parade.
