EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley hosted a town hall Wednesday and gun control was a hot topic.

Merkley spoke to a packed audience at Lane Community College. In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, he asked the audience what they thought of increased gun control measures when he started the town hall.

Merkley said one of the measures being discussed is strengthening the background check system to include expanding it to domestic violence and ensuring information is actually uploaded into the system.

The crowd cheered in support of these ideas.

"I think the students in Florida have really had a cry from the heart when they have said they don't want a moment of silence, they want a moment of action. And I hope we can look forward to some."

Merkley also spoke on his plans to introduce the BUILD Act, to better invest in Career and Technical Education.
