EUGENE, Ore. -- Beginning Monday, Costco will require every employee, member and guest to wear a facial covering inside their stores.
Dan Clay is the president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555. The group represents 25,000 workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
"I'd love to see masks being required wherever essential employees are required to work," Clay said. "It seems like a pretty fair trade. If they have to work to see the communities, then the community should be able to wear a mask to protect them."
Clay said that whether it’s convenient or not to where a mask, it could potentially save a life.
"I know in Oregon we have specifically talked to the governor and asked her to require masks for anybody shopping at an essential business for essential workers,” Clay said.
Dan Russell is a Eugene resident and said that he is favor of the new requirement.
"There were a lot of people doing it, but I think they are going to run into trouble tomorrow," Russell said. "There seem to be so many people that are not wearing them yet and people who don't seem to be keeping the social distance.
Some shoppers reflected on if face mask use will still be prevalent, after the pandemic ends.
"I think until we get vaccines, a lot of people are going to continue to wear them but after the vaccine, dependent on how effective it is, I think they will disappear," Russell said.
Other stores are also increasing their precautions, such as Whole Foods and Safeway.
