Search underway for missing bicyclist

The man was expected to arrive at his destination Thursday evening.

UPDATE: The man has been found safe. Deputies said they talked to him on the phone on May 29. He said he had arrived at Diamond Lake. There was a misunderstanding on when he would be in communication with his family. 


DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. – A search is underway for a bicyclist who never arrived at his destination, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jared Johnson, 65, was dropped off at Lake in the Woods on Monday and planned to ride his bicycle about 50 miles to Diamond Lake on forest roads. He was supposed to arrive by Thursday evening.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, the sheriff’s office was notified and search and rescue crews were sent to the area.

Johnson is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, and has gray hair and blue eyes. He has a bicycle equipped with a trailer, and he left with survival gear and food and water.

Anyone who has seen him or a bike with a trailer in the Umpqua National Forest area should contact the sheriff’s office at 541-440-4471 referencing case #20-2364.
