SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Springfield Police are still searching for one vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that took place Friday night.

The crash took the life of Zacory Hooks, 22, who was walking westbound in the 7500 block of Main Street.

On Sunday, KEZI 9 News spoke to Hooks’ father.

Sgt. Robert Rosales is a supervisor with the Springfield Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

“We need to try to identify the initial vehicle that struck the pedestrian on Main Street,” Rosales said. “There’s a total of three vehicles involved and two that we have identified. So far, these vehicles were subsequent to the initial vehicle that struck the victim on Main Street. That’s the vehicle we are still trying to identify.”

One driver that hit Hooks had stopped to render aid. Another driver swerved out of the way and missed him. A third vehicle hit Hooks but kept on driving.

Rosales said that there are a few things both drivers and pedestrians should keep in mind.

“Stay as far off on the shoulder as possible if you have to walk,” Rosales said. “As far as vehicles, always being aware of your speeds and aware of your surroundings when you're driving, particularly when it comes to pedestrians or as you're entering -- such in this incident, you’re entering the city coming up from the McKenzie Highway. You’re entering the city with sidewalks soon to begin. Think about starting to slow down and be ready for any unforeseen obstacles that may be in your way.”

An eyewitness KEZI 9 News spoke to on Saturday said he saw Hooks walking that night wearing all black and looking down at this phone.

If you have information regarding this incident, contact Officer Tony DelCastillo, who is leading the investigation. He can be reached at 541-726-3714.
