SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Springfield School Board has declared an emergency after the roof of Thurston High School's auxiliary gym collapsed on Friday.
The declaration will allow the district to waive the bidding process so they can do repairs more quickly.
A support beam came down on Wednesday due to heavy snow, and no one was injured.
Jenna McCulley with Springfield Public Schools said it was first noticed by staff members who heard a cracking noise.
The roof collapsed during the school board's meeting on Friday.
McCulley says crews will begin the demolition and clean up process tomorrow and that there were no other buildings that were affected.
She also says that Springfield School District has deployed crews to to ensure all the other buildings are sound.
With insurance covering most of the damages, McCulley doesn't anticipate the cost of repair being more than $25,000.
Because of the damage, McCulley said they are moving this weekend's state basketball tournament to Springfield High School. A high school Dance and Drill competition is being moved to Sheldon High School.
