SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- In the Willamette National Forest stands a forgotten lodge. The Santiam Pass lodge was once filled with hikers or skiers, but now it’s full of broken glass and years of wear.

Dwight and Sue sheets have been waiting a year and a half for their request to restore the lodge and surrounding grounds. They met with the forest supervisor and signed the official permits to start their restoration of the site.

“It feels great. It’s been a long process. It’s been a lot of work. And it’s very exciting it’s coming together. And this is just the beginning,” says Sue Sheets, Friends of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge.

“The slowness actually gave us more time to think about which way the project should go and what would be the best steps to take and so we didn’t have to run head long into something and have to say is this the right thing?” says Dwight Sheets, Friends of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge.

The Sheets will work closely with the McKenzie River District Ranger over the next few years as they clean up, rebuild, and reopen the lodge.

“The next step for us is to work with the sheets to meet all the regulations, like with the stay historic preservation office, to make sure we are restoring this lodge in a way that is accessible for the public and meets all the character that’s needed to meet as it’s restored,” says Darren Cross, McKenzie River District Ranger.

The restoration is expected to take 3-5 years. The sheets ask anyone interested to contact them through the Friends of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge Facebook page  or website.
