SPRINGFIELD, Ore.-- Springfield residents and businesses may face higher rates from Sanipac in the coming months. On Monday night, the waste company met with the City of Springfield to propose increasing prices.

Sanipac told KEZI that recycling has become more expensive, and they've been eating the higher cost for months.
Sanipac sends their recycling up to Portland and Vancouver. They said those facilities have increased costs.

Now, Sanipac will propose a 5.9% increase in rates to help cover the difference.

Aaron Donley, a spokesperson with Sanipac said it will mean an estimated $1 increase a month for the average household.

He said they are closely watching the rates, and will try to lower them as soon as possible.

“If we want to continue the same services that we had, we need this to cover those costs. I mean, we'll readjust as soon as we can. We just want to make sure we're taking care of the citizens of Springfield,” Aaron Donley with Sanipac said.

Donley said they will revisit the rates in about six months.

He said the best thing people can do is make sure their recycling is clean and organized. That way, larger companies won't continue to raise rates on Sanipac. If you’re not sure what should go in the recycle, you can visit the Sanipac website.

If approved, the rates will increase on January 1st, 2018.
