EUGENE, Ore. -- Sanipac wants residents to know that not all plastics can go into recycling bins.

The garbage service company said if plastic bags get into recycling bins, they can contaminate the other recyclable material. This is an issue because contaminated material cannot be sent to China to be processed and recycled. Contaminated materials then end up in the landfill.

Sanipac said people are better off putting non-recyclable things in the garbage instead of risking contamination.

They said flattened cardboard, cans, plastic, newspapers, magazines and plastic jugs, tubs or bottles are all okay to throw in the recycling bin. Other things like glass can still be recycled. But it needs to be separated into a glass recycling bin.
