Salem man arrested for leading police on chase in Springfield

A man is in jail after leading police on a chase in Springfield.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A Salem man was arrested after leading police on a car chase in Springfield.

Officers tried to make a traffic stop near Gateway Street and International Way. They said instead of stopping, the driver sped off.

Police said the suspect circled the Game Bird neighborhood during the chase. The tires were flattened when police used a spike strip but the driver kept going.

The driver eventually stopped at the shopping center on Pioneer Parkway and ran from officers.

Police arrested Jerry Laurence Teixeira. He was arrested on charges of eluding by vehicle and foot, reckless driving and reckless endangering, driving while suspended, felon in possession of a restricted weapon, possession of methamphetamine.

Police said he also had four outstanding warrants.

Teixeira made his first court appearance on Thursday. He was formally charged with reckless driving, reckless endangering, criminal driving while suspended, and two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
